"Forever Marilyn" stands in Pioneer Court near the Michigan Avenue Bridge. The Toronto Star says the sculpture is a venture involving the Zeller Realty Group and The Sculpture Foundation, and the aim is to draw crowds. Johnson is a New Jersey artist who is a member of the family of Johnson & Johnson healthcare products fame and a cousin of actor Michael Douglas. He is known for offbeat works.
This one already is controversial. (I have not seen an explanation of why the statue stands in Chicago, rather than Manhattan, where Itch is set and where Monroe's skirt was blown up by air escaping from a subway grate.)
Abraham Ritchie writes on the blog Chicagonow.com that the depiction of the late star bent over with white panties showing is "creepy" and "sexist."
Ritchie writes that the Johnson piece "caters to cheap titillation, titillation that is in itself pathetic. By making Monroe's panties visible, Johnson encourages voyeurism. When I visited it recently there were no less than three men taking pictures of Monroe's rear. ... The eroticism of the actual scene in the movie is drained out as the moment lasts eternally."
